MD crossed Contract Demand. Repeated crossings can lead to a Contract Demand revision in many states.

Illustrative defaults — replace them with your own bill and tariff. Electricity duty and fuel surcharge are not included. Set the minimum billing demand to 0 if your tariff has none.

How the calculator works

  • Billing demand is the higher of your MD and the minimum billing demand — in Uttar Pradesh, for example, 75% of Contract Demand.
  • Demand charge is billing demand, up to Contract Demand, times the demand charge.
  • Excess-demand charge is every kVA above Contract Demand, times the demand charge, times the excess-demand rate — twice the normal rate in many tariffs.
  • The spike is the same month worked out at your usual peak. The difference is what that one interval cost.
One interval sets the month

MD is the highest single 15- or 30-minute interval of the month. Keep that one interval under Contract Demand and the excess-demand charge for the whole month is gone.

What it leaves out

Electricity duty and fuel surcharge on top of the demand charge, and the higher fixed charge every month after a Contract Demand revision. Some tariffs charge excess demand in slabs, or only beyond a margin above Contract Demand — enter the figures from your own tariff order. The MD penalty guide explains how demand is measured.

How KONDUKTOR® EMS helps

KONDUKTOR® EMS reads the multifunction meters already on your panels and works out running MD live — on the same 15- or 30-minute interval as your tariff — against the Contract Demand you set for each meter.

  • It warns your team while the interval is still building toward Contract Demand, so there is time to hold back a load.
  • It records when each meter peaked, so you know which panel set the month’s MD, and why.
  • Month-by-month MD history, coloured against Contract Demand, gives you the numbers for a Contract Demand revision.

Common questions

Where do I find Maximum Demand and Contract Demand on my bill?+

HT and HV bills usually print Contract Demand with the connection details and the month’s recorded MD with the meter readings. The demand charge and any excess-demand charge appear as their own lines in the charges.

Is the excess-demand charge always twice the demand rate?+

No. Twice the normal rate is common, but the multiplier, and whether it applies to all of the excess or only beyond a margin, differs by state and consumer category. Use the figure from your tariff order.

Should we raise Contract Demand instead of paying penalties?+

Compare both. Run the calculator for every month that MD crossed Contract Demand and add up the penalties, then compare that with the extra fixed charge a higher Contract Demand would add every month, including the months you do not need it.
